    טְפֵי, טְפָאI (cmp. טָפַח II) 1) to grow faint, to die out, be extinguished. Targ. 1 Sam. 3:3. Targ. Job 18:5, sq.; a. e.Y.Sabb.I, 3b bot. אילין בעיין דיִטְפֵיוכ׳ they (the children) desire that the lamp grow dim (so that they need not study, and therefore will not snuff it). Lev. R. s. 9 אשכחא בוצינא טָפֵי she found the lamp gone out; (Y.Sot.I, 16d bot. מִיטְּפֵי Ithpe); a. e. 2) to put out, extinguish. Targ. Cant. 8:7. Targ. 2 Sam. 21:17; a. e.Y.Yoma VIII, 45b בעי מִטְפְתָה wanted to put it out; Y.Ned.IV, 38d מיטפייה (read: מִיטְפִינָהּ). Ib. אפי׳ר׳ אימי יִטְפֵי (or Af.) even R. l. would have been permitted to extinguish the fire on the Sabbath. Af. אַטְפֵי same. Tanḥ. Vayigg. 5 נורא דתמר כלתך אנא מַטְפֵי I will put out the fire intended for Tamar (I will curb thy passion; Yalk. Gen. 150 אנן מנהרין we shall light for thee). Ithpe. אִיתְטְפֵי, אִיטְּפֵי to be extinguished, grow dim. Y.Sabb.VI, 8c bot. (read:) איטפי בוצינא אמרה לה לא איתטפי אמרי לא מיטפי בוצינאוכ׳ is the light out? Said she, it is not out.
